We’ve turned to a centuries old practice inspired by design masters of the past.

Most of us know about vintage cameo engraving, but in contrast there is another rare form of engraving known as intaglio. This kind of carving is a specialized skill and a highly laborious technique. Intaglio designs came before the more widely recognized cameo (see our Cameo Collection). Evidence of intaglio technique emerged in the East in the 4th-3rd centuries B.C. Many in that era believed that gemstones had supernatural powers and as a result started to carve distinctive symbols and images onto them, believing that this could improve their chances of success and happiness. Catherine the Great was one of history’s most avid intaglio gemstone collectors. She would design whole collections around intaglio carvings. As a result, Intaglio became a carving reserved for the wealthiest and those who couldn’t afford originals could enjoy replicas. Much of the difficulty in creating intaglio work is that it’s done practically blindfolded, since the gemstone is hidden before you cut it. Camouflaged within oil and water the designers slowly and precisely make sample impressions of the mirror image until completed.

Today, you can enjoy vintage inspired replicas of intaglio jewelry.
Each beautifully created and will compliment any outfit.
